Having completed the Raid Pyrenean last autumn the challenge this year was to tackle the Raid Alpine, a ride on an altogether different scale, over seven days from Thonon Les Bains on Lake Geneva to Nice on the Med.
A group of 16 of us set out to conquer the most famous Cols of Le Tour and to ride 754 km with a total ascent of over 16,000m – all supported and organised through Julie and Ian Wright of Pyrenean Multisport based in Luscan.
It was just one of the most amazing weeks I have spent on a bike, the weather was superb, the camaraderie brought everyone together, plenty of competitive riding amongst the group which made for great sport and plenty of discussion in the evenings!
Good food, a mixture of hotels and chalets, all very comfortable.
An epic day in the middle of the week to take in Col du Lauteret, down to Bourg D’Oisans and up The Alp and the 21 bends; day six over the highest paved road in the Alps the Col de Bonnette just blew me away, the most sensational ride of the trip for me; Col des Saisies on day two, the prettiest climb – and of course giving it ‘a right go’ up the Col du Telegraph on day three!
And what a way to finish with a dive into the Med in full cycling kit followed by a sumptuous feast to round off a fabulous week!Share
